Recently there has been much press about low cost breath test devices ranging from £9.99 to £70.00, well it does not matter which device you buy, because if they use low cost sensor technology and most use semi-conductor sensors, then the accuracy, repeatibility and reliability from these low cost devices will fall a very long way short of the accuracy found in devices used by Police and Professional standards.
So why should the public be so concerned? Brian Roake the managing director of MEDACX states 'its very simple, semi-conductor technology has been proven not suitable when you need precise, accurate and reliable breath alcohol measurements and certainly comes nowhere near the accuracies of the superior sensor technologies used by Police, such as the AlcoQuant 6020, where such devices are required to be independantly tested and meet Home Office type approval for use by Police, this is something the low cost self test devices do not meet, moreover they have never been submitted for use as breathalysers for Police use, why? Again simple the technology would not meet the standards required'.
'Some manufacturers of low cost self test devices including those targeted at the morning after do try to act responsibly and publish their accuracies but unless you really understand what they mean a statement saying accuracy of +/-0.2 0/00 BAC is actually the same as +/-20 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood, and given the UK Drink drive level is 80mg/100ml, then a device where its published accuracy is at best +/-20mg/100ml means its +/-25% of the pass or fail level or worst still if the accuracy is not linear, could mean you have an error band of upto 40mg/100ml or 50% of the Drink Drive level!! In which case you might just as well flip a coin, as these devices will not provide the precise reading and leave the user potentially at risk of relying on inaccurate devices which could easily lead them to belive they are safe to drive when in fact they may NOT!
Brian Roake echo's the voice of the Police when he states 'if you are considering driving then you should certainly NOT CONSIDER drinking, its NOT worth the risk to yourself, your loved ones, family and to others by selfishly and irresponsibly taking risks. Don't drink and Drive!
